Final Blog Post

I chose my topic because I have family that work in the hospital and after talking about wealth disparities in class it made me realize that one medical incident could easily drive an impoverished family into ruin. After looking at a few articles it became obvious that many people of color experienced the problem of lacking healthcare than white people. I decided that to reach my target audience I would inform them of the growing expansion of ACA medicaid available for those who do not have health insurance. Although I sent both authors of the article my factsheet I did not get a response from either of them. Therefore I got no feedback when it came to interpretting and using their article in my project. I only shared my materials on my blog for a handful of reasons. The main reason being that since I didn't get any input from the authors about the article of theirs I am unsure whether the information I used was properly applied. Also, I found it difficult to format my post in a wa...

Immigration

Nativism and racism are related because when someone is not from your homeland they are seen as different and change. Because of that sense of unknown stereotypical and racist thoughts start to cloud the mind that are absed off of loose assumptions. When someone non-native finds themself in a new area those around them will develop these ideas due to lack of knowledge and it starts to unconciously fester into these false charicatueres around specific races. This then ties to immigration because those who are native to areas liek the US believe that they need to protect their home and that outsiders don't know how things work. Examples of these assumptions are that they won't understand the culture, are coming for personal gain, will end up causing trouble, etc. It is from these fears that immigration policies arrive because we can not be sure what every person's true intentions are, and it is instances like 9/11 where foreigners get visas that makes giving out citizenship s...

Neurodiversity

Discrimination against neurodiverse individuals is institutionalized because neurodiverse individuals are labeled and put into this category of others. Through false ideas about neurodiverse people and the lack of correction of these false claims many have decided that there is little any can do to help these individuals so it is best if they are kept seperate. Since a majority of "normal" individuals think this way it is inevitable that institutions are then built to work for "normal" individuals and not be modified to accompany neurodiverse people. This is similar to racism in the way that negative and incorrect claims were made about a minority population and the general public accepted them as fact which then led to institutions to be built and accomadate what the majority identifies as normal. In the podcast autism is described as both a blessing and a curse. When having a child with autism it can definitely be a chore to raise a child that has a hard time comm...

Traumatic Influences of MENA Americans

The three macrolevel factors related to cumulative trauma are historical trauma, national context, and institional discrimination. Historical trauma is defined as experiencing trauma from your country of origin whether that be opression, torture, war/violence etc. National context is seen as a group who experiences scrutiny in a hostile environement. An example used in the article is after 9/11 when those of Muslim heritage where seen as terrorists due to the bad potrayal from the media. Institutional discrimination is the enaction of discrimination through institutions of society. The article brings up the US PATRIOT Act which gave the government powers to spy on anyone they deemed suspicious in order to prevent further terrorism. Looking further we see that many MENA Americans were targeted by this hasty act and had their privacy invaded due to their ethnicity. When it comes to microlevels factors the two factors identified are interpersonal discrimination and microagressions. When i...

Latino and Native American Populations

Overall, racism has a very negative effect on one's mental health. Because of this it can also have reprocussions on physical health as well. We see evidence of this in studies where cortisol levels for Latino's is significantly higher than other races/ethnicities. This can lead to more heart diseases, high blood pressure, etc. In Native Americans many will attempt to pick up alcohol in order to subdue the pain temporarily. This is seen especially if their family does not warn them and openly speak out against alcohol use. Studies then show a high rate of cirrhosis in Native Americans due to this abnormal consumption of alcohol. For Latino youth there are many different influences that can weigh heavily on Latino development. This can range from all sorts of things like family immigration status, language barriers, education, etc. These influences affect almost every aspect of a young adolecenses life and can have drastic effects on mental health if they are constantly reminded ...

Multiracial Identity

Not all multiracial people identify as multiracial. Some find it much easier to identifhy as either and will be selective. That or family will encourage children to embrace a certain ethnicity so that they can be privy to some of the benefits of identifying as a seperete race. All sorts of factors can affect how people choose to identify whether it be socioeconmic, environmental pressures, or jsut comfort of choice to be more free from the scrutiny of others. Compared to monoracial people multiracial people have to battle with the large amount of stereotypes that come with identifying with multiple races. Because of not being accepted by either race and then being a victim to many stereotypes it is much harder to find support to accomodate the problems that come with having to grapple with multiple races. Things that Black college students might expereience is the typiacl stereotypes that come with being Black in a college environement. An example being looked at as either an "e...
