Multiracial Identity
Not all multiracial people identify as multiracial. Some find it much easier to identifhy as either and will be selective. That or family will encourage children to embrace a certain ethnicity so that they can be privy to some of the benefits of identifying as a seperete race. All sorts of factors can affect how people choose to identify whether it be socioeconmic, environmental pressures, or jsut comfort of choice to be more free from the scrutiny of others. Compared to monoracial people multiracial people have to battle with the large amount of stereotypes that come with identifying with multiple races. Because of not being accepted by either race and then being a victim to many stereotypes it is much harder to find support to accomodate the problems that come with having to grapple with multiple races. Things that Black college students might expereience is the typiacl stereotypes that come with being Black in a college environement. An example being looked at as either an "educated Black person" or as a "lax and carefree Black person". Both of these stereotypes are constantly thrust upon them thorughout college and each has its own negative consequences that occur being caught under both of those stereotypes. Many things play into the structure of a Black family. One thing that may affect the family formation is that high incarceration rates can lead to many one parent households. Because of this many of those families were stuck below the poverty as well due to the the fact that only one family member is pulling in a decent income. This then takes any opportunities away from both the children and family as a whole. This then leads to less of a chance of Black families having children who get a college education. This then triggers a cycle of poverty and oppression in Black families. What might help Black families is if there were ways for Black families to be able to work around financial struggles so that more opportunities would arise to overcome poverty and pursue a college education and be able to move up the socioeconomic ladder.
